Introduction to Embroidery for Fashion & Textiles

This 2-day embroidery workshop introduces you to many easy and decorative stitches to use for embellishing garments and textiles. Students will embroider a motif of their own design.

On the first day, you will be taught how to work many of the key surface stitches in the world of embroidery, such as stem stitch, chain stitch, buttonhole stitch, satin stitch, couching, French knots, Turkey stitch (my favourite stitch) and a couple of spider wheels (these are so decorative and pretty and easy to work).

On the 2nd day of the workshop, you will be shown how to ‘play’ with these stitches. For example, stem stitch and chain stitch can be used together to create petal stitch. It is possible to use satin stitch for shading and it is a wonderful stitch to work over padding to make the work look more 3D.

You will need to bring with you to the first class a small hoop frame, which can be bought at Lincraft or Spotlight, plus a pair of small, sharp scissors. There will be samples to study and images of embroidery on clothes and textiles in class to inspire you. Students will be encouraged to practice these stitches between the two workshops. A small designed motif (preferably your own design) – could be a bird for example – is to be brought to the 2nd workshop. Stitches will be suggested for your motif.

I have been trained in many fields of embroidery at the Royal School of Embroidery at Hampton Court Palace in London – surface stitching, goldwork embroidery and bead and sequin embroidery being my specialities. I have published a book on Goldwork Embroidery. As a Visual Arts teacher in Senior Colleges until 2003, I introduced stitching as an expressive means, mainly for Art Wearables. Since 2007, I have been a sessional lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney, delivering lectures on embroidery and running embroidery workshops for all 2nd year students in Fashion & Textile Design. I design and make embroidered garments and textiles for exhibition.
