Bead & Sequin Embroidery For Fashion & Textiles - Day 1

  • Makerspace 12 Gerald Street Marrickville, NSW, 2204 Australia (map)

This workshop will introduce you to a great variety of bead & sequin embroidery techniques, which will add texture and sparkle to your fashion and textile items. Mary will show you examples of her own work and images of work by others. Then she will demonstrate bead embroidery techniques, such as attaching beads or crystals using the zig-zag method to create sinuous lines and attaching beads using the stem stitch technique to create scrunchy areas of texture. She will show you how to make bugle beads stand upright and long beaded ‘dingly danglys’.

You will move onto sequin embroidery and some of these techniques will include beads and crystals as well. This will include the gorgeous ‘fish-scale’ sequin technique to fill up shapes. Mary will show you how to create ‘stacks’ with sequins, beads and crystals and flower-like rosettes. You will create beautiful samples for each technique studied. This workshop is suitable for beginners.

A kit including, beads, sequins, crystals and beading needles will be provided and is included in the cost of the workshop. The students will need to bring fabric suitable for this form of embroidery. It needs to be a plain closely woven fabric with no stretch. Students will also need to bring a small embroidery hoop (available at any textile or craft shop), a small pair of scissors, pencil, and a lid from an ice cream container for their beads, to prevent them rolling onto the table.
